What is Social Media

The term “social media” is used too frequently in today’s world and it is very popular not only with the young millennials, but also with the boomer generation. So exactly what is social media? If you are new to the internet culture, then you might not be knowing much about it and must be wondering what is social media

To define the term social media, we can use a bunch of boring jargon but that would probably only complicate things further. So, we will employ the best way to get a clearer understanding of it by breaking it down into simpler terms. To begin with, let’s have a look at each word individually.

What is Social Media

What is Social Media

‘Social’ : This term refers to interacting with people around you by sharing information with them and receiving and understanding information from them.

‘Media’ : This refers to a source of communication with each other, like the internet, TV, radio, newspapers etc.

When we combine both these separate terms, we can form a basic definition to answer what is social media:

Social media is any web-based communication and information sharing tool that enables people to interact with each other by sharing information, receiving them and making sense by understanding them.

This might seem like a broad definition, but we need to keep in mind that social media is a very broad term. This definition of social media is as specific as we can get without going down to focusing too much on a more specific subcategory of social media.

Common Social Media Features

There are some common list of features and things that every social media platform has. Looking for them on an internet platform is the best way to answer if that particular site could be classified as social or not. This list includes:

What is Social Media

Personal user accounts:

A social media site allows visitors to create their own accounts that they can log into, and which can be used for user-based social interactions. A social media platform makes it possible to share information or interact with others online anonymously, but having to create some kind of user account first is more of a common, standard thing among social media sites.

Profile pages:

A social media site is all about interpersonal communication. For this, a profile page option is included to help represent an individual and give them a space to create their own personal brand defining their characteristics. The profile page often includes certain information about the individual user, like a profile photo, bio, website, feed of recent posts, recommendations, recent activity and other things.

Newsfeeds:

When social media sites allow users to connect with other users on social media, they’re basically saying, “I want to get information from these people.” This additional information is updated for them in real-time via their news feed and timelines.

Information sharing:

A site or an app that allows its users to share absolutely anything, with or without a user account, then it can be categorised as social media. This information could be a simple text-based message, a photo upload, a YouTube video, a link to an article or anything else.

Like buttons and comment sections:

The most common ways in which social media sites allow their users to interact and reply to other people’s shared information are through buttons that represent a ‘like’ plus a comment section where others can share their thoughts.
